The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
